Poetry has changed so much in the last 150 years. Simile and metaphor have often been abandoned for a direct voice unsupported by metrical internal rhythms.
Rather than evoking a 'poetic' romantic haze, verse may now jolt us into uncomfortable psychological states. Verse only lives if it is read aloud, but modern poetry is so easily remembered without the aid of rhyme and meter. Why?
