The Judith Wright Lectures were inaugurated at the second Australian Poetry Festival in 2001.
The lectures are named after Judith Wright not only because of her qualities as a poet, but also because of her willingness to initiate debate in difficult areas.
A senior figure from the world of poetry - though with some flexibility in that respect - is invited to speak on a topic of strong personal interest; the sort of topic for which the right public occasion might not have arisen. Difficult or controversial topics are welcomed.
The presentation of Judith Wright Lectures is a key event at Australian Poetry Festivals. Topics are not announced until the paper is due to be given.
