Meet the 2006
Committee

The Poets Union is a non-profit, members' based organisation incorporated in NSW (Y1945602).

We now have over 600 members across Australia. Our primary purpose is to encourage and develop opportunities for poets and contemporary poetry in Australia. The Poets Union, run by volunteers and one part-time employee, is motivated by a desire to bring the love for words and ideas to the outside world. We organise readings, workshops, tours, and festivals all round the country. The Poets Union is supported by the NSW Ministry for the Arts, the Australia Council, Broadway Shopping Centre and Leichhardt Council.

History of the Poets Union

... in the beginning was the word ...

The Poets Union was formed in August 1977 in Melbourne, revitalising Australian poetry with a new attitude to one of the oldest of all artforms. Poetry was taken off the dusty bottom shelf and into the streets, being read in pubs, cafès and parks, and finding new shapes and sounds to reflect a changing world.

Twenty years later, the Poets Union is a vital and dynamic organisation. Its membership continues to expand. Not only is poetry being read, but sung, shouted, danced, painted and carved in stone. Poetry now has as many faces, as many voices, as there are personalities.
